The Florida cottonmouth is a thick-bodied venomous pit viper that lives in the southeastern United States. It is found in wetlands across Florida and southern Georgia, including on some offshore islands. It matters because its venom can be lethal, and it is often mistaken for harmless watersnakes.1

Hoe om dit te herken

  • Adults are usually 76 to 122 cm long, with a thick body and a broad head.1
  • The head has bold black stripes on each side of the cheeks, edged above and below with light cream or white lines.1
  • The body is olive brown, dark brown or black, with 10 to 17 dark bands. Adults often grow darker and their bands can be faint or absent.1
  • Newborns and young snakes are clay-red or 'red dirt' in colour, with the same pattern as adults.1
  • A pair of dark vertical lines runs down the tip of the snout.1

Word dikwels verwar met: It is often confused with harmless watersnakes (Nerodia) and other semi-aquatic snakes that share its habitat. The Florida cottonmouth has a longer tail, with a relative tail length of about 17.4% in adult and subadult males. Its head markings are lighter, cleaner and more sharply defined, even in older snakes.1

Gifkrag

Byte

Gif kom deur sy giftande of tande uit wanneer dit byt.

Wat doen sy gif as dit byt of steek?

Its venom is very hemolytic, meaning it destroys red blood cells. It also causes relatively extensive necrosis, which is death of body tissue, compared with many other snake venoms. Its venom can sometimes be lethal.1

Hoe gevaarlik is dit vir mense?

Gevaar vir mense: Ernstig'n Byt moet deur 'n dokter gesien word. Sterftes is baie skaars.

The venom can sometimes be lethal, with a 17% mortality rate.1

As dit byt

  • Hou die persoon stil en kalm, hou die gebyte arm of been op hartvlak, haal ringe en stywe goed af, en kom vinnig by 'n hospitaal uit.

Bel altyd eers jou noodnommer (112, 000, 911). Dit is algemene noodhulpraad, nie mediese advies nie. Noodhulp-basiese beginsels

Bly veilig

  • As een jou byt: bly kalm, bly stil, bel jou noodnommer (112, 000, 911) of kom vinnig by 'n hospitaal uit. Onthou hoe dit gelyk het, 'n foto help.

Dit is nie uit om jou te kry nie. Dit gebruik sy gif om kos te vang of om homself te beskerm, en kruip baie eerder weg. Meer oor veilig bly
