The zebra spitting cobra is a venomous snake with dark stripes across its body. It lives in the deserts and drier parts of southern Africa, and it is often found near people, including inside homes. It can spit venom at its enemies, which makes it a snake to respect.1

Word dikwels verwar met: It was long thought to be a subspecies of the black-necked spitting cobra (Naja nigricollis), but differences in body shape and genes led to it being recognised as a separate species. Both of its subspecies are smaller than the black-necked spitting cobra. The subspecies known as the black spitting cobra is solid black, with no stripes.1
