The Central American coral snake is a highly venomous snake with bold red, yellow and black rings. It lives in forests from southern Mexico through Central America to north-western Colombia. It is mostly active at night and usually avoids people, but it can bite if it is handled or pinned.1

Its venom contains a strong neurotoxin, which attacks the nerves and causes neuromuscular dysfunction, meaning the nerves and muscles stop working properly. The average venom yield is 8 mg, and the maximum recorded yield is 20 mg. The lethal dose for an adult human is estimated at 4 to 6 mg.1
