The gaucho brown spider is a highly venomous recluse spider found in South America. It lives in dark corners, rock crevices and sometimes inside houses, so it is one spider people should know how to recognise.1

It hunts insects and other arthropods, catching them in its strong webs. It is nocturnal, so it hunts mainly at night.1

Pale to dark brown, often with a reddish tint.1
A violin-shaped mark on the upper body, slightly darker on the carapace (the hard shell over the front of the body).1
Long, slender legs with no dark marks or stripes.1
Males have a V-shaped design on the front of the body; females have a U-shape.1

Its venom causes pain, swelling, redness, bruising and pale skin at the bite, and can kill skin tissue (dermonecrosis). It can also cause hemolysis, the breakdown of red blood cells, which can lead to anaemia. In a study of 81 cases, two people developed acute kidney injury.1
