The round ribbontail ray is a large stingray that lives in warm, shallow seas across the Indo-Pacific, from South Africa to Japan and Australia. It can grow to 1.8 m across, and it is valued by divers for its size and striking look. It has a venomous tail spine, so it is one to admire from a distance.1

It hunts bivalves, crabs, shrimps, and small bony fishes on the seabed. It presses the edge of its disc against the bottom and blows water through its spiracles to uncover prey buried in the sand.1

It is not aggressive and has been known to approach and investigate divers. If harassed, it can inflict a severe wound with its venomous tail spine. At least one diver has died after being stabbed while trying to ride one.1

It is one of the largest stingray species, reaching 150 kg in weight.1

Females can be pursued by dozens of males during reproductive gatherings, which have been seen in groups of hundreds at Cocos Island.1
