The Asian paper wasp is a slender wasp that builds its nests from chewed plant material and saliva. It lives mainly in East Asia, especially China and Japan, and has spread to New Zealand and Australia, where it competes with native insects for food.1

It often builds nests on houses and other buildings, and also on branches, bushes and sometimes leaves. It prefers towns and cities, but nests are also found near forest clearings. Large populations form in warm, low-lying open areas such as shrublands, swamps and meadows.1

1.3 cm থেকে 2.5 cm (0.5 in থেকে 1 in)1

Adults collect nectar and honeydew from flowers. They hunt invertebrates, especially caterpillars and moth and butterfly larvae, for protein, and may also eat marine invertebrates or fish carrion.1

When a wasp of its own kind tries to steal from its nest, the nest-guarding female chases it off by flying in a double helix pattern with it.1

Queens destroy up to 70% of the eggs laid by workers in their colony.1

Workers police each other's eggs. In one study, 88.5% of queens' eggs survived to hatching, compared with 1.4% of workers' eggs.1

When food is short, a lone queen will eat some of her own larvae rather than leave the nest to hunt.1

The larval saliva that adult wasps feed on contains free amino acids at 50 times the level found in flower nectar.1

There are about 300 paper wasp species worldwide, and the genus Polistes is the largest in the family Vespidae.1
