The barbfish is a small, well-camouflaged sea fish that lives in the Western Atlantic. It hides on the seabed and waits for prey, and its fin spines carry venom. It can cause severe pain and serious illness, so it is important to recognise it and keep well away from it.1

  • Body colour may be red, brown, greenish-brown, yellow or white, and paler on the belly.1
  • Small, round dark spots on the lower head and body.1
  • Three or four brown blotches along the side, below the lateral line.1
  • Pectoral fins are green-brown or yellow in the centre.1
  • Many spines along the back, and a camouflaged look that blends in with the reef bottom.1

The venom is found along the spines of the dorsal, pelvic and anal fins. It contains neurotoxins, which attack the nerves, cytotoxins, which damage cells, and potent hemotoxins, which damage blood. A sting causes intense, immediate pain and swelling that can spread to the groin or armpit and last for several hours. Whole-body effects can include sweating, pale skin, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, heart problems, unconsciousness and shock.1
