Bruno's casque-headed frog is a tree frog with sharp, pointed bumps on its head. It lives in forests on the coast of southeastern Brazil. It is special because it can inject venom using spines on its skull, which is unusual among frogs.1

It lives in forests and forest edges. By day it hides in water-filled hollows in trees or bamboo, and in the water-filled centres of bromeliad plants. It can climb to about 500 m above sea level.1

  • Sharp, pointed projections on the head, with the skin fused to the skull1
  • Pale brown or grey back with irregular dark markings1
  • Long, slender legs with adhesive discs at the tips of the toes1

This frog injects venom through the sharp spines on its skull, which it uses by headbutting. Unlike poison dart frogs, which only release poison from their skin, it delivers venom directly into the target. The venom is estimated to be about 25 times as toxic as that of the local fer-de-lance pit viper.1
