Dark fishing spider
The dark fishing spider is a large brown spider from the United States and Canada. It lives mostly in wooded areas, where it spends much of its time up in trees. It is a 'fishing' spider because of its family, but it is better known for living in trees.1
- Pale to dark brown in colour1
- Several chevron (V-shaped) markers on the body1
- Lighter stripes around the legs1
- Legs banded with brown or black on the upper segments, and reddish-brown or black on the lower segments1
- Females are much larger than males1
Similar to Dolomedes scriptus, which also has chevron markers and lighter stripes around its legs.1
It is capable of biting people, but it typically flees at the slightest movement. In most cases the bite is no more severe than a bee or wasp sting. People who are sensitive to spider venom may be at risk.1
It typically flees at the slightest movement rather than staying to fight.1
