The spiny oak slug is the caterpillar of a moth in the family Limacodidae. It lives on deciduous trees and shrubs across the eastern United States, and its spiny body can cause painful skin reactions, so it is worth knowing well.1

Usually yellowish green, with bright red, square markings on the back, though orange forms are also common.1
The body is flattened and oval in outline, with spiny bumps along the back and sides.1
The sides have craters ringed with black or white.1
Maximum length is about 2 cm.1

Caterpillars are often confused with other caterpillars in the same genus, particularly Parasa species. The adult moths are the easiest to tell apart: Parasa has a larger green patch on its forewings, while Euclea delphinii has a brown thorax, where Parasa has a green one.1

The spiny bumps along the back and sides are venomous. In people, symptoms range from mild itching and burning to more serious reactions.1

Contact can cause mild itching and burning. Some reactions are serious enough to need medical attention.1

Some hairs at the tail end of the final caterpillar stage are called 'caltrop' spines, after Roman defensive weapons. They can fall off.1

The pupa sits in a cup-shaped cocoon with a circular escape hatch.1

Several parasitoids attack this species, including tachinid flies and both eulophid and braconid wasps.1

Males far outnumber females in these populations.1
