It preys on many arthropods, including ants (such as fire ants), other spiders, pillbugs and ticks. It also catches some spiders that are believed to be harmful to humans, including the brown recluse. It catches whatever comes into its web and builds the web to suit the size of its prey.1

It is not very defensive towards humans. There is one known case of human envenomation.1

Below or inside its web, there can be many dead insects, from stink bugs to other spiders and even wasps.1

Among the Steatoda spiders, it is one of the most voracious and prey-driven, even though it is one of the smaller species.1

Because of its limited eyesight, it relies mostly on vibrations travelling through its web to find prey and to sense larger animals that could harm it.1

Its egg sac is loosely woven silk and is about the same size as the spider itself.1

It spends hours each day building its web and eats during only part of its day.1
