• In the breeding season, the male's tail develops a white or bluish stripe that shows in dim light1

Sovint es confon amb: Some naturalists consider it a subspecies of Paramesotriton chinensis. Others disagree, because the two have separate ranges and differ in appearance and habitat preference.1
