Blade fire coral is a fire coral, a colony of tiny animals that builds a hard skeleton. It lives in shallow waters of the Caribbean Sea. Touching it with bare skin can cause a severe sting, so it is best to keep your distance.1

Startseite
It grows in shallow water where the water moves strongly and is cloudy with sediment, and it tolerates silt. Its encrusting base spreads over the surface it grows on. Bare skin that touches the coral can be stung.1

Was frisst es?
Its feeding polyps have hair-like stinging cells that detect zooplankton and trap it. Tiny crustaceans called copepods make up most of its diet. It also gets much of its carbon from algae living in its tissues, and it feeds mostly at night.1

So erkennst du es

  • Thin, upright plates or blades that can grow up to about 50 cm tall1
  • Pale brown or cream colour, with white tips on the blades1
  • Smooth blade surfaces with irregular outer edges and many stumpy bumps1

Giftkraft

Stiche

The stinging cells fire and inject venom into prey within three milliseconds. Contact with bare skin causes a severe stinging sensation.1

Ruf immer zuerst deine Notrufnummer an (112, 000, 911). Das sind allgemeine Erste-Hilfe-Hinweise, keine ärztliche Beratung. Erste-Hilfe-Grundlagen

Bleib sicher

Fakten

1

Its stinging cells can fire and inject venom into prey in just three milliseconds.1

2

Blade fire coral is one of the first coral species to recolonise damaged reefs.1

3

Broken pieces of its blades can reattach to the seabed and survive.1

4

In a 1998 Caribbean bleaching event, many colonies died, but many blade fire corals recovered and regained their colour within a few months.1

5

Its tissues contain tiny algae called zooxanthellane, which provide much of the carbon the coral needs.1

6

It feeds during both day and night but mostly at night.1
