The small-scaled burrowing asp is a black snake that lives underground in parts of West Africa. It is a venomous snake with long, hollow fangs, and scientists have studied it only a few times in the wild. It is interesting because it uses its fangs in an unusual way.1

¿Qué come?
Its diet is not well studied. Snakes of its genus have been found with small rodents, birds, lizards, frogs, locusts and white ants in their stomachs or mouths. It stabs prey from the side, often underground, using one fang.1

Cómo reconocerlo

  • Black in colour, with a lighter, flatter belly than its back1
  • Smooth body scales1
  • Flattened head with a blunt snout, covered in plates rather than small scales1
  • Short tail and a neck that is not well defined1
  • Average length about 45 cm, with some reaching 75 cm1

Se confunde a menudo con: It is often confused with vipers (family Viperidae) because its long, hollow fangs look similar. Its head is covered in plates, while vipers have small scales on the head.1

Poder del veneno

Mordeduras

Its venom is thick and slightly milky in appearance. It appears to be related to elapid venom rather than viper venom. In humans, the bite may first cause pain near the bite, followed by numbness and swelling in the same area.1

Its venom is not considered very lethal to humans. However, there have been deaths, mainly among younger children.1

¿Qué hace cuando se asusta?

It sits still with its nose pointing towards the ground, as if ready to dive into the soil, though this has been seen only a few times.1

Mantente a salvo

Datos

1

It has long, hollow fangs, but usually uses only one of them to stab its prey.1

2

When given several mice, it envenomated all of them before going back to eat them.1

3

Most of its prey burrows, so many of its strikes happen underground, where there is little room to move.1

Cazamitos

Mito: It is a viper, because it has long hollow fangs like vipers.

Verdad: It is not closely related to vipers. Its fangs are similar, but it is more closely related to the families Colubridae and Elapidae, and its venom is unlike viper venom.1
