Dancing white lady spider
The dancing white lady spider is a huntsman spider that lives in the sand dunes of the Namib Desert in Namibia. It hides in burrows during the hot day and comes out at night, when it can tap on the sand to send messages to other spiders.1

Näin tunnistat sen
- Creamy white in colour1
- Body length up to 32 mm1
- Males have leg spans up to 14 cm and are lighter in weight than females1
- In males, 5 to 8 legs have a median tibia dorsal spine, a small spine on the leg; in females it is seen on no more than 4 legs and is rarely present1
- Active at night only, wandering over the sand1
Sekoitetaan usein: It is often mistaken for the wheel spider (Carparachne aureoflava), which has a similar name and lives in the same area. They are different species.1
Myrkkyvoima

Faktat
The spiders communicate by tapping their front legs on the sand. This seismic signalling is called drumming.1
Males may be attacked and killed by females if their drumming signal is too much like that of prey.1
Males can travel more than 50 metres in one night while searching for a mate.1
Each spider has eight eyes arranged to give a full panoramic view of its surroundings, which is unusual for spiders at night.1
Burrows can be up to 40 cm long and 25 cm deep, and their shape keeps them cooler than the surface.1
Females live about 6 months, while males live only 1 to 2 months.1
Myyttien murtaja
Myytti: It is the same spider as the wheel spider
Totuus: It is often confused with the wheel spider, but they are different species, even though they live in the same place.1
