It is an opportunistic, nocturnal hunter that eats insects, other spiders and small animals such as mice, lizards, frogs, snakes and occasionally birds. It kills prey with venom, injects digestive juices, then sucks up the liquid. It will also dive to catch fish.1

Colour ranges from dull black or grey to rusty orange-brown.1
Freshly moulted spiders are black, and they turn brown just before a moult.1
Hairy legs, with an oval abdomen up to 10 cm across.1
Leg span can reach 20 cm.1
Small, weak eyes that can only judge light levels.1

Many hairy tarantulas from North and South America can shed urticating hairs, which are barbed and can cause severe itching. This species is an Old World tarantula and does not have these hairs on its abdomen.1

The venom is not medically significant to people. It may cause some nausea, and a person who is abnormally sensitive may need medical attention.1

The venom is not considered medically significant. The spider will bite humans if provoked, but its main defence is to run away.1

It rears up on its hind legs, smacks its front legs on the ground, and rubs leg pairs I and II together to make a sound like tearing velcro. It may also bite, but usually runs away.1

It is one of the only spiders known to swim, and it will sometimes dive to catch fish.1

Most spiderlings kill each other for food, but some have been found sharing food with their siblings.1

Its fangs point downwards and work like pickaxes rather than pincers.1

During a moult it lies on its back, weak and dehydrated, and is very vulnerable to animals that would normally be its prey.1

After moulting it avoids eating for about a week so its new fangs can harden.1

It does not spin webs. It spins only a little silk, used for egg sacs and to line its burrows.1

Baboon spiders spin webs to catch their prey.

They do not make webs. They hunt at night and take whatever prey they find.1
