Brachygastra mellifica

The Mexican honey wasp is a small social wasp that lives in colonies and builds large paper nests. It is one of the few wasps that makes honey, and it helps pollinate avocado flowers. It lives from Panama through Central America and Mexico, and in parts of Arizona and Texas.1

It hunts the psyllid Diaphorina citri in tree shoots, sucking its body fluids and sometimes eating the whole insect. It also eats weevil larvae and moth larvae.1

Small, with a body length of 7 to 9 mm.1
Abdomen can be almost as wide as it is long.1
Paper nests 40 to 50 cm across, with a rough, brown or grey, non-glossy surface like cardboard.1
Queens have a dark reddish-brown abdomen.1

A single nest can house anywhere from 3,500 to 18,700 wasps.1

In Los Reyes Metzontla, Mexico, the Popoloca people eat its honey and larvae, harvesting them when the moon is between its last quarter and waning gibbous.1

It helps pollinate avocados, carrying avocado pollen on its hairy head, thorax and legs.1

Scientists have studied it as a natural control for Diaphorina citri, a pest that spreads citrus greening disease.1
