Green on top, and pale green to whitish underneath1
A bright stripe along each side. In males it is white on top and orange or brown underneath. In females it is white.1
21 rows of dorsal (back) scales at the middle of the body in most individuals1
Males have a tail base that is enlarged, which helps tell the sexes apart1

It is most often confused with T. s. stejnegeri. The two have clearly different hemipenes (the male reproductive organs), so telling them apart reliably needs a male and a close examination of the hemipenes. They are not known to share the same range. It is also closely related to Trimeresurus yunnanensis, which is usually told apart by its 19 midbody scale rows instead of 21.1
