The spiny oak slug is the caterpillar of a moth in the family Limacodidae. It lives on deciduous trees and shrubs across the eastern United States, and its spiny body can cause painful skin reactions, so it is worth knowing well.1

Usually yellowish green, with bright red, square markings on the back, though orange forms are also common.1
The body is flattened and oval in outline, with spiny bumps along the back and sides.1
The sides have craters ringed with black or white.1
Maximum length is about 2 cm.1
