The emperor scorpion is one of the largest scorpions in the world, with adults averaging about 20 cm long. It lives in rainforests and savannas in West Africa. It is popular in the pet trade, and it is protected by CITES because over-collecting threatened wild populations.1

Mit eszik?
It mainly eats insects and other land invertebrates, with termites making up a large part of its diet. It sometimes eats larger animals such as rodents and lizards. It uses its large claws to tear apart prey, and its sting injects venom that liquefies the food.1

Its venom contains ion channel toxins, including imperatoxin and pandinotoxin. Most people are not severely affected by its sting, and its venom does not cause severe symptoms in most people. Juveniles use their sting to paralyse prey, while adults rely mainly on their claws.1
