The many-spotted cat snake is a rear-fanged tree snake covered in rows of round brown spots. It lives across much of South and Southeast Asia, and also in north central Florida, USA. It is mildly venomous, but it is shy and rarely bites.1

This snake is found in a wide variety of places. By day it hides in hollows and cracks in tree trunks. It prefers rocky crevices and thin branches in plain sight, and often hunts on branches that overhang water.1

It mostly hunts just before daybreak, feeding mainly on lizards such as geckos and small skinks. It also eats lizard eggs and may catch fish from branches over water.1

  • Grey-brown back with two alternating rows of round dark brown, reddish-brown or chestnut spots1
  • Two smaller rows of spots along the lower sides1
  • Two blackish bands on the head that spread apart towards the back1
  • A blackish streak running from the eye to the corner of the mouth1
  • Whitish underside, marbled or spotted with brown, with a row of brown spots along each side1
