The eastern carpenter bee is a large bee that lives across eastern North America, from the eastern United States into southern Canada. It digs its nests into wood, often in buildings and furniture, so people can come across it close to home. Its nests are social, with groups of females sharing one entrance.1

It feeds mostly on nectar and pollen. Some long-tubed flowers are pierced at the base with its sharp jaws to reach the nectar, which can bypass pollination.1

Mating happens only once a year, in the spring, and often includes a bobbing dance by a group of males.1

The bees can recognise each other and show more aggression toward bees from other nests than toward their own nestmates.1
