The Siberian pit viper is a venomous snake, found across a wide area of Asia. It lives from Russia, east of the Ural Mountains, through Siberia, Iran, Mongolia and northern and central China. It also reaches the southern Ryukyu Islands of Japan.1

Grows to a maximum total length of 59 cm; the largest male on record measured 53 cm.1
Body is moderately stout, with a snout that is slightly upturned when viewed from the side.1
Back is grayish, pale brown, reddish or yellowish, with large dark spots or crossbars that have serrated borders.1
A wide dark stripe runs behind the eye, bordered by light stripes above and below.1
Belly is whitish, speckled with gray or brown.1
