The Sunda slow loris is a small, slow-moving primate with large eyes and a wet nose. It lives in the forests and rainforests of Indonesia, West Malaysia, southern Thailand and Singapore. It is special because it produces a toxin in glands inside its elbows, which it spreads over its fur while grooming.1

It eats phloem sap, floral nectar, fruit, gum and arthropods such as spiders and insects. It licks wounds on trees to feed on gum and also eats molluscs, including the giant land snail, and birds' eggs.1

The Sunda slow loris has dark inverse teardrop markings around the eyes that meet the dark stripe on the back of the head, a more distinct white stripe between the eyes, and a browner coat. The Bengal slow loris is larger, greyer and shows less contrast.1

All slow loris species produce a toxin in glands on the insides of their elbows. The animal spreads this toxin over its body and onto its young using its toothcomb while grooming. The toxin is in its saliva-covered fur, and it can bite when threatened.1

Its teeth are often pulled out before it is sold as a pet, which can cause infection or death. Without its teeth it cannot be released back into the wild.1

It has an extremely low metabolic rate compared with other mammals of its size.1

It mostly lives alone, with one study showing it spent only 8% of its active time near other individuals.1

It is one of the most abundant primate species on sale at Indonesian pet markets.1
