Mertens' coral snake is a venomous snake with bold red, black and white or yellow rings. It lives in northwestern South America, in Ecuador and Peru. It is one of the larger coral snakes of its group.1

It hunts other snakes, a habit called ophiophagy. Its prey includes blind snakes such as Epictia subcrotilla and the venomous pit viper Bothrops pictus.1
