The Maricopa harvester ant is a desert ant that builds nests with sand, gravel and rock. It lives mainly in Arizona and nearby US and Mexican states. Its venom is believed to be among the most toxic of any insect, so it is important to know it when you see it.1

Nest mounds that contain rocks and gravel1
Sand nests with a cemented cap, which is about 60% calcium carbonate1
Ants that attach to the skin with their jaws (mandibles) and turn around the spot to sting again and again1

Its venom contains amino acids, peptides, proteins, alkaloids, terpenes and other compounds. Its most distinctive part is an alkaloid poison, which also releases an alarm pheromone that alerts nearby ants, so several may sting at once. In humans, a sting causes intense pain.1

The venom is believed to be the most toxic insect venom in the world. In mice, the LD50 (the dose that kills half the animals tested) is 0.12 mg/kg, which is less than one-twentieth as strong as the honey bee. A sting causes intense pain that can last from four to eight hours.1

Its alarm pheromone alerts other ants in the area, so several ants may sting at the same time.1

Its venom is believed to be the most toxic insect venom in the world.1

Twelve stings can kill a 2 kg rat, according to tests in mice and rats.1

Its alarm pheromone is a chemical signal that makes nearby ants sting together.1

Its cemented caps are about 60% calcium carbonate, which is carried up from layers below the surface.1

It helps decomposition by dragging dead insects underground, which enriches the soil for plants and crops.1
