The striped eel catfish, Plotosus lineatus, is a fish that lives mainly on coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific. It is now also found in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It has venomous spines on its fins that it uses to sting when threatened.1

Symptoms range from mild to severe and include extreme pain, dizziness, redness, swelling, tissue death, numbness, vomiting, breathing difficulty, shock and sepsis.1

In laboratory tests, its sting was lethal to fish, crabs and rodents.1

Juveniles gather in ball-shaped schools of about 100 fish.1

It reached the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, and has been recorded there since 2002.1
