Taenianotus triacanthus

Taenianotus combines the Latin 'taenia', a narrow flat band, with the Greek 'notus', meaning back, for its long fin. The species name triacanthus means 'three spines', although the fish actually has only two spines on its cheek.1

The leaf scorpionfish is a flat, leaf-shaped fish that looks like a dead leaf drifting in the water. It lives on tropical coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific. It is special because it hides in plain sight and waits for its prey to come close.1

It is an ambush predator. It waits until a small fish or shrimp comes close, then moves in slowly with its pectoral fins and opens its mouth suddenly to suck the prey in. It eats small crustaceans, fishes and larvae.1

The venom of the leaf scorpionfish is considerably weaker than that of the lionfish and stonefish.1

It relies on camouflage, resembling a dead leaf and making gentle sideways movements with its pelvic area so it looks like a drifting inert object.1

If its spines stab you: stay calm, keep still, call your emergency number (112, 000, 911) or get to a hospital fast. Remember what it looked like, a photo helps.
