The Alcatrazes lancehead is a small pit viper, a venomous snake that senses heat with pits on its face. It lives only on Ilha Alcatrazes, a small island off the coast of southeastern Brazil. It is special because its island home has shaped it over thousands of years into a snake that stays small.1

It eats small lizards, centipedes and amphibians. Its main food was rodents, but once it was isolated on the island it began eating cockroaches and centipedes as well.1
