This frog injects venom through the sharp spines on its skull, which it uses by headbutting. Unlike poison dart frogs, which only release poison from their skin, it delivers venom directly into the target. The venom is estimated to be about 25 times as toxic as that of the local fer-de-lance pit viper.1

It is one of the few frogs known to use skull spines to inject venom by headbutting, a tactic it shares with Corythomantis greeningi.1

It hides in a crevice that is exactly the right size, then uses its head to seal the entrance.1

Unlike poison dart frogs, it delivers venom through spines in its skull rather than releasing poison from its skin.1
