The California forest scorpion is a small scorpion that lives in the Redwood Forests and Oak Woodlands of California. Scientists consider it a foundational species, meaning many other living things in these forests depend on it. It is shy and rarely seen.1

It is mostly found on south or west-facing slopes, usually in remote western hills. It prefers moist places, so it sits under rocks, bark, logs and dead trees on the ground. It lives at elevations from 5 metres up to 2000 metres.1
