  • Body is red or sandy yellow with light blotches, matching the sand or coral around it1
  • Skin has no scales except along the lateral line, and is covered with spines and wart-like glands that give a knobby look1
  • Flattened, concave head with the eyes, mouth and nostrils projecting upwards and outwards1
  • When disturbed, it fans out its brightly coloured pectoral and caudal fins1
  • Adults reach about 26 cm in body length1

Inimicus filamentosus and Inimicus sinensis look almost identical. The key difference is on the underside of the pectoral fins: the black bands of filamentosus are fainter, and the bands of sinensis have yellow spots.1

When threatened it fans its brightly coloured pectoral and caudal fins as a warning, and once dug in it is very reluctant to leave its hiding place.1

If its spines stab you

  • If its spines stab you: stay calm, keep still, call your emergency number (112, 000, 911) or get to a hospital fast. Remember what it looked like, a photo helps.
