The emerald horned pit viper is a pit viper, a type of snake with heat-sensing pits between its eyes and nostrils. It lives only in the mountains of eastern Mexico, where its bright green body helps it blend into the forest. It is special because it is found nowhere else in the world.1

Has 37 to 46 dark blotches on the back, outlined in black, which join to form a wavy dark stripe along the middle of the back.1

Has a horn-like scale above each eye that does not touch the eye.1
Has no rattle on its tail. Juveniles are grey in colour.1
