The Mexican pygmy rattlesnake is a small, venomous pit viper. It lives in the mountains of central and southern Mexico, and nowhere else in the world. Its venom and its rattle make it a useful animal to learn to recognise.1

It lives in the temperate highlands of the Mexican Plateau, at moderate to high elevations. It is found from about 1,490 metres to a little over 3,000 metres above sea level. Its range includes the highlands of Mexico, Morelos, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca and the Sierra Madre del Sur in Guerrero.1
