The spiny-tailed monitor is a lizard from northern and western Australia. It lives among dry, rocky hills and is known for its round tail covered in spiny scales. It is a small monitor, and it hides in rock cracks and burrows during the day.1

It hunts mainly arthropods such as grasshoppers, beetles, spiders, centipedes and snails. It also eats small lizards, which make up about a third of its diet, and sometimes marsupial joeys.1
