The spinybacked orbweaver is a small spider with six spiky projections on its rounded abdomen, which look a little like a crab's shell. It lives across North, Central and South America and the Caribbean, and has been introduced to Hawaii. It is a member of the orb-weaver family, which builds round webs.1

Females are 5–9 mm long, with a black carapace (top of the body), black legs and a black underside with white spots.1
The upper side of the abdomen is white or yellow with black spots.1
Females have six spine-like projections on the abdomen.1
On a white abdomen the spines can be red or black; on a yellow abdomen they are always black.1
Males are much smaller, at 2–3 mm long, with a grey abdomen with white spots and four or five stubby spines.1
