Suzhen's krait is a venomous snake with black and white crossbands, described as a new species in 2021. It lives in rice fields, streams and monsoon forests in southwestern China and northern Myanmar. Scientists say it is very dangerous, because kraits can be potentially lethal.1

In captivity it eats eels, such as the Asian swamp eel, and small snakes, such as the yellow-spotted keelback water snake. It refuses mice and frogs.1

  • Black and white crossbands along the body, a feature shared by all banded kraits of the genus Bungarus1
  • The top of the head is uniform black1
  • The lower half of the head and the underside of the head are yellowish-white1
  • The iris (coloured part of the eye) is dark black1
  • Experts tell it apart from other banded kraits by the shape of its crossbands and by its head and tail patterns1

มักสับสนกับ: It is often confused with the immature black-and-white banded krait. Suzhen's krait has a different shape of crossbands, tail pattern, head pattern and mid-body pattern, and differs in its teeth and male reproductive organs, which only experts can check.1

It is a very dangerous snake. Kraits are potentially lethal, and in 2001 famous herpetologist Joseph B. Slowinski died from a bite of this species while leading an expedition in northern Myanmar. At that time the bite was thought to come from an immature black-and-white banded krait.1
