The Karoo button spider is a venomous spider that lives only in South Africa. It belongs to the same group as the black widow spiders. Its bite causes very unpleasant symptoms, so it is worth knowing about if you live in or visit its range.1

The web has loose, interconnected threads that lead to a tightly woven retreat.1
Its retreat is inverted and cup-shaped, with pebbles built into the dome.1
