The monkey slug is the larva, or caterpillar, of the hag moth. It is covered in tufts of hair on its body, and it is a common sight on the leaves of trees and shrubs in orchards. The hairs can cause irritation to people.1

Each projection is densely covered in hairs.1
The third, fifth and seventh projections are often longer than the others.1
The larva is 1.5 to 2.5 cm long.1
