The Chinese bird spider is a large tarantula that lives in mountain areas of southern China and Vietnam. It makes silk-lined burrows and comes out at night to hunt large insects. Females are among the biggest spiders in Asia.1

  • Abdomen (rear body) with black stripes running across it and a black stripe down the centre of the upper surface1
  • Silk lines radiating from the mouth of the burrow, used as alarm lines1
  • Females are much larger than males: 53 to 85 mm long, against 37 to 44 mm for males (body plus chelicerae, the fangs)1

常被误认为： It resembles Cyriopagopus hainanus. The Chinese bird spider has a dark yellow-brown body and shorter thorn-like spines on the forward-facing sides of the maxillae (the jaw-like mouthparts), which tell it apart.1
