The Himalayan pit viper is a venomous snake that lives on the southern slopes of the Himalayas. It is special because it has been found at up to 4,900 metres above sea level, which makes it the highest living snake ever recorded. It is a shy, slow-moving snake that spends its days hidden under rocks and fallen timber.1

It is a highland snake, found at altitudes from 2,100 to 4,900 metres in the mid and western Himalayas. It hides under fallen timber, in crevices, under rocks and boulders, on ledges, and among stones and fallen leaves.1
