Dendrobates tinctorius
Gbasara aha ya: The specific name tinctorius does not refer to its colours. It comes from legends of some indigenous tribes, who said they used frog poisons to make green parrot feathers grow in different colours.1

The dyeing poison dart frog is a small, brightly marked frog from the rainforests of north-eastern South America. It is one of the largest poison dart frogs and one of the most colourful, with more than 30 recognised colour forms. Its skin contains toxins, so it is a frog to admire from a distance.1

It lives in patches of tropical primary rainforest, mostly in hilly or upland areas, at altitudes up to 600 m, though some populations are found at sea level. It is often found in canopy gaps, where trees have fallen, and it uses water-filled spaces on fallen trees for its tadpoles.1

Its skin secretions contain alkaloids, which are toxic chemicals that interfere with nerve and muscle tissue. They can cause pain, cramping and stiffness, and in severe cases locomotor difficulties, convulsions, paralysis or death. In a reported case in Brazil, two men who handled the frog felt numbness within about 20 minutes, and the symptoms had gone after 40 minutes.1

The frog is toxic if eaten, and its skin toxins can affect anyone who handles it. In a reported case, two adult male photographers in the Brazilian Amazon both had mild numbness that passed within 40 minutes. Their symptoms could have been worse with longer contact or if there had been a wound where they touched the frog.1

Its bright colours warn predators that its skin secretions are unpleasant, and predators that bite it tend to link the colours with the pain.1
