All rattlesnakes are venomous, and this species has one of the least potent rattlesnake venoms. Its venom contains enzymes that break down proteins and damage tissue, and it can cause massive swelling, pain, bruising, blisters and tissue death at the bite site. Symptoms can also include nausea, vomiting and bleeding problems, because the venom affects how the blood clots.1
