The Darling Downs funnel-web spider is a venomous spider from eastern Australia. It is one of several Australian funnel-web spiders found in Queensland and New South Wales. Its venom can cause severe reactions, so knowing what it looks like matters.1

Both males and females have a shiny black carapace (the hard shell covering the front of the body).1
Legs, chelicerae (the fang-bearing mouthparts) and abdomen are dark brown to black.1
The carapace is longer than it is wide.1
Males have a pale patch on the underside of the abdomen.1

The venom of males and females is equally toxic. It becomes more toxic in early summer, after the spider has fasted over winter. Bites can cause severe envenomation, which means a serious reaction to the venom.1
