The demon stinger is a fish from the Western Pacific that lies half-buried in sand or coral during the day. It has venomous spines on its back, so it is best left alone.1

It lives on sandy and coral seabeds. During the day it digs partly into the sand or rests on a coral head, and divers can disturb it there.1

Body is red or sandy yellow with light blotches, matching the sand or coral around it1
Skin has no scales except along the lateral line, and is covered with spines and wart-like glands that give a knobby look1
Flattened, concave head with the eyes, mouth and nostrils projecting upwards and outwards1
When disturbed, it fans out its brightly coloured pectoral and caudal fins1
Adults reach about 26 cm in body length1
