Hemprich's coral snake is a small, venomous snake that lives in the rain forests of northern South America. It spends most of its time hidden in leaf litter on the forest floor, so it is rarely seen. It is one of the many coral snakes whose bright black, white and orange bands warn that it is dangerous.1

  • Triads of black rings separated by white rings, as in other coral snakes1
  • The black rings in each triad are very wide, and the white rings are very narrow1
  • The coloured rings between the triads are narrow and orange, not wide and red1
  • The anal plate (a scale near the tail) is undivided, which is unlike other Micrurus species1
