The highland copperhead is a venomous snake that lives in the cool, high country of eastern Australia. It is common in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, around towns such as Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale.1

Its colour varies from pale to dark grey, reddish-brown or chocolate brown, through to almost black.1
It always has a low gloss or matt sheen.1
Some enlarged scales on the sides of the body may be cream, yellow or reddish-brown.1
The upper lip scales are strongly barred. The pale, triangular lower front corner of each one stands out against the dark brown rest of the scale.1
The belly is cream to pale yellow, or sometimes leaden-coloured.1
