The pinktoe tarantula is a large spider that lives in the rainforests of northern South America. It spends much of its life high in trees, where it hunts insects and small tree frogs. It is often seen as one of the gentlest tarantulas, and it is a popular pet for beginners.1

People also meet it as a pet, as it has been kept in the United States since the early to mid-2000s.1

It is an ambush predator that uses its webbing as a trap and senses movement from prey through the web. Its main prey is insects such as crickets, wax moths, grasshoppers and cockroaches. It also eats small tree frogs and sometimes small lizards, although these are not a major part of its diet.1

Adults have a dark-coloured body and pinkish feet.1
Juveniles have a pinkish body and dark feet.1
The colours reverse as the spider approaches adulthood, at about 4 to 5 years old.1
A fully grown spider can reach about 15 cm (six inches).1

The spider has a bite that injects venom. Its venom is considered mild, even compared with other New World tarantulas.1
