The spiny-tailed monitor is a lizard from northern and western Australia. It lives among dry, rocky hills and is known for its round tail covered in spiny scales. It is a small monitor, and it hides in rock cracks and burrows during the day.1

Upper side is a rich, dark brown with bright yellowish to cream spots, which often enclose a few dark scales1
Tail is round in section and has very spiny scales1
Tail is about 1.3 to 2.3 times as long as the head and body combined1
Pale longitudinal stripes run along the neck1
Has 70 to 115 scales around the middle of the body1
