The Central American bushmaster is a large pit viper that lives in the rainforests of Central America. It is a heavy, long snake, and adults commonly grow to more than 200 cm. It hunts at night on the forest floor.1

It lives in tropical rainforest and lower montane wet forest, where annual rainfall is very heavy, often 2,000 to 4,000 mm. In drier parts of Nicaragua it is found in gallery forests and seasonally dry forests, but always near water. It is hardly ever found outside old growth forest, at altitudes from sea level to 1,100 m.1
